Early December we found out Michael might be going to Taiwan near the beginning of January. After our fantastic adventure in Europe we were just itching to get out and about again. Originally we were thinking Italy would be our next destination, but then we thought of how great would it be if we could piggy back off of Michael's Taiwan trip and stop off in Thailand! The only problem was we weren't sure exactly when Michael was going and his supervisors kept going back and forth. I booked off the time from work just in case but sadly the trip got cancelled right after Christmas. Well, we were still itching for a grand adventure so instead of taking 2 weeks off we took 2 days off and went up to Big Bear. It was wonderful!
We started off Thurs morning gathering all the food we would need for our two night three day adventure. Michael says I pack like I will be stranded somewhere for a month. You never know what can happen when you're on vacation...or maybe I just really like food.
Like every trip we ever take, something always seems to go wrong that ends up working out for the better. In this case our cabin that we booked was double booked and since we were the overlap we were the ones getting booted. The sad part is we were already half way to our destination when we discovered this. Well, the next three hours were spent with Michael, me, the owner of the cabin, and Marilyn all looking for a place to stay. It was the weekend after New Years so it wasn't looking too good. Eventually the owner gave us a call and told us he had found a place. After making all the arrangements we finally arrived at Grandma's Cabin...
It was a lot nicer than we expected, and we found out later a lot more private than the cabin we were originally staying at. We absolutely loved our time there and know where we will be staying anytime we go to Big Bear. It was in a nice quiet part of town and had some great sledding slopes nearby that weren't crowded with people. They also had this adorable fella jut down the way.
We were instant friends!
We spent the next day sledding, playing in the snow and walking around the adorably decorated village and shops. We had come at the perfect time, there was still plenty of snow but the roads were all clear.
And it was the perfect opportunity to use the wolf hat I got at the New Year's gift exchange
We tried out a couple different sleds, but the green disc was our favorite.
We had a few good runs on it, but then this happened...
(notice the little shadow behind Michael at the end...it's the other half of the sled)
Afterwards, we got to come home to a nice cozy fire. It was the perfect weekend getaway.
The next day we headed back down the mountain to Los Angeles to take advantage of our Christmas gift from the OC McPhies to see the Queen Mary and the Ice Kingdom.
So many neat ice sculptures
The Queen Mary in ice form :)
And the politically correct portion of the tour.
We ended with a fantastic skating session. Michael didn't even fall once! I was so proud. It was my first time using hockey skates instead of figure skates...I really missed the toe pick.
And since we already had such a great time, we thought we'd indulge ourselves by making a somewhat lengthy trip to one of the last Chevy's in southern California.
We had to race to get there because we wanted to make sure we were there before they closed, but it was all worth it for this...
