Michael barely had a moment to rest from his flight up to Canada before we were taking off on our first adventure, this time in the RV my parents bought on their last visit to the U.S. Our destination: Sproat Lake.
Michael thought it was pretty funny that we would be leaving a place like my house, which is surrounded by nature, to drive 4 hours to another place surrounded by even more nature. I can see how this might seem ridiculous to someone from the city, to whom all nature must look the same, but for a true British Columbian it is perfectly understandable. And even though we do indeed have 3 lakes within 15 minutes of our house we wanted to ensure Michael received only the best. Really though, the reason we made the 4 hour drive to Sproat lake was because they have the best river to tube down right next to it.
Which is exactly what we did :)
It's about a two hour trip downstream. At first we didn't know what we were going to do since we only had the RV and usually you park one vehicle at the top of the river and one vehicle at the bottom, but luckily Marvin was able to find someone to drive him back up when we reached the end. Although Michael and I still had to hide our sneakers in the bush in case we had to run back up....
Michael must be really good luck because it was the perfect weather. It's probably because we are constantly trying to convince him that in B.C. it rains most of the year and we only ever get a few days of sun. I don't think it's ever really rained a single time he's been in Canada. Figures.
When we arrived at Sproat Lake we had reserved a camping spot next to the lake. We got to our spot and all but a few of the campers were in tents, and here we were with our 36ft RV. Considering the amount of time and effort it usually takes to set up a campsite, it was both exciting and embarrassing to realize that after taking five minutes to back in, set the RV, and slide out the extendable sides, we were completely finished. It was also a little humbling to realize that Michael and I had become the people we usually make fun of; camping in an RV is not really camping. I was just grateful my parents didn't have a satellite dish. In our defense we never intended to go camping, we just needed a place to park the RV. On a side note, the guy next to our site prevented us from hitting a big rock by helping Marvin back in, but after he noticed we were finished setting up after sliding out the extendable sides he promptly informed us that he wished he'd let us hit the rock. He was joking...I think.
Anyways, I've gotten way ahead of myself. Our drive to Sproat Lake was also full of many adventures.
First we drove through Chemainus, which is famous for its large murals all over the buildings. Here are just a few:
Next we stopped in Parksville to see the sand castle contest they have each summer
Michael insisted my mom and I have a picture in front of this one because it's "part of our native heritage." He's never going to let that one go.
These were my favorites, it looked so neat how they were coming out of the picture.
Weird.
And of course Michael's favorite was the sea otter.
And the large "smug whale"
